Uglies is a dystopian science fiction film based on the book by Scott Westerfeld, set in a future where everyone undergoes surgery at age 16 to become "perfect." The protagonist, Tally Youngblood, eagerly awaits her transformation until she meets Shay, who rejects the surgery and runs away to a rebel community. Tally then has to decide between following the system or joining the resistance. The film addresses issues of beauty, identity, social conformity and freedom of choice, criticizing superficiality and the pressure to conform to unrealistic beauty standards. It will star Joey King, and will be directed by McG and produced by Netflix.
