Volleyball was invented on February 9, 1895 by William George Morgan in the United States. Initially known as Mintonette, the aim was to create a non-contact team sport to minimize injuries. Soon, the game, which started with a basketball, gained popularity under the name volleyball. Morgan died on December 27, 1942. In 1947, the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) was founded, and two years later the first World Championship took place, initially only for men. The women's event was included in 1952. Since 1964, volleyball has been an Olympic sport. Starting at the 1988 Olympic Games, a new rule prohibited interruptions to dry the court, leading players to carry towels tied to their shorts.
