October 17, Brazilian Popular Music Day, in honor of the birth of Chiquinha Gonzaga, the first official composer of Brazilian popular music, born in 1847 in Rio de Janeiro. The date was established by Decree Law No. 12,624, of May 9, 2012, during the government of President Dilma Rousseff. Chiquinha Gonzaga was a pioneering figure in Brazilian music, known for her timeless songs that continue to inspire great artists such as Elis Regina, Chico Buarque, and Caetano Veloso. She also founded the Brazilian Society of Theater Authors and played a fundamental role in the development of popular music throughout the 20th century. The term "Música Popular Brasileira" (MPB) emerged in the 1960s, referring to a generation of influential singers and composers who stood out in song festivals, mainly in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
