Promoting Responsible and Conscious Use

November 18th is European Antibiotic Day. This date was established by the European Commission in 2008 with the aim of raising awareness about antibiotic resistance and promoting the responsible use of these medicines. Antibiotic resistance is a growing global health problem, which occurs when bacteria become resistant to medicines that were previously effective in fighting them. This can lead to infections that are more difficult to treat, increasing the risk of complications, hospitalizations and mortality. The day encourages education on the proper use of antibiotics, the importance of completing prescribed courses and the need to avoid overuse or inappropriate use of these medicines. In addition, it promotes awareness-raising actions for health professionals, patients and the general public, highlighting the importance of preventing infections through proper hygiene practices and vaccination.
