From the early 1970s onwards, funk gave rise to several subgenres, such as psychedelic funk, funk rock, jazz-funk, avant-funk, go-go, boogie, electro-funk, funk metal, G-funk, Timba funk, funk jam and samba-funk. Each subgenre incorporates distinct elements, such as the use of synthesizers in psychedelic funk, the fusion of funk and rock in funk rock, and the influence of jazz in jazz-funk. Notable artists include George Clinton, Prince, and bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers and Living Color. Funk continued to evolve and influence diverse musical styles throughout the decades, from the 1970s to the 1990s and beyond.
