It was founded on November 28, 1907 in Matosinhos, it is a Portuguese multi-sport club, with football being its main sport. The club stands out in other sports such as volleyball, boxing and swimming. In football, Leixões won the Portuguese Cup in 1960/61 by beating FC Porto and had important international participation, including in the UEFA Cup and the 1961/62 Cup Winners' Cup, reaching the quarter-finals after a historic comeback against FC La Chaux-de-Fonds. The club is considered one of the biggest in national sport and has a club named after it in Luxembourg, Leixões SC Luxembourg. Its main rivalries include the Dérbi do Mar with Varzim SC and Rio Ave FC, and the Dérbi de Matosinhos with Leça FC, with which it competes in historic clashes due to its geographic and cultural fishing proximity. The club plays at the Estádio do Mar, opened in 1964, and is known by its fans as "Bebês do Mar" or "Heróis do Mar".
