Jumping events in athletics are divided into vertical and horizontal. Vertical jumps include the high jump and pole vault, while horizontal jumps are the long jump and triple jump. In vertical jumps, athletes try to overcome a horizontal bar (bar) in the high jump, and in pole vault, they use a pole to help with momentum. After each jump, there is a mattress to cushion the athlete's fall. In horizontal jumps, such as the long jump and triple jump, athletes land in a sandbox. They run to a mark on the track before jumping, and passing or touching that mark results in a null attempt. Jumps are performed by both men and women, and competitors have several attempts to reach the greatest distance or height possible. Winners are determined by the best performance in their respective tests.
