John Musker and Ron Clements, animation directors, wanted to respectfully portray Polynesian culture. So they conducted intensive research in Fiji, Samoa and Tahiti to learn more about the traditions and customs of that culture. While there was acknowledgment from the Polynesian people for all the efforts to pay homage, upon releasing the film some discussions arose about the construction of characters such as Maui and Grandma Tala.
