The influence of astrology in ancient China was so strong that palaces were built to suit astrological symbology. Each season of the year had its earthly representation in the palaces and sectors of the celestial kingdom. For example, during the Shang Dynasty, the emperor had to reside in palaces according to the season and face south during audiences, as the south represented the center of his kingdom, the North Star. The doors of each palace were oriented according to the season: the summer palace facing south, spring facing east, autumn facing west and winter facing north.
