Chess is played by two players on an 8x8 checkered board. Each player starts the game with 16 pieces. The set includes a king, queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights and eight pawns. Each piece has specific moves. Each player makes one move at a time, alternating with each other. Pieces can move to an empty square or capture an opposing piece occupying a square occupied by it.
