Thomas Ian Griffith is an experienced martial arts fighter, which guarantees well-choreographed and realistic fight scenes in both the film and the Cobra Kai series. At 18, he already had a black belt in Taekwondo, which helped him land the role in Karate Kid 3, his first acting job. Although Karate Kid 2 is set in the Japanese province of Okinawa, filming for the film did not take place there. The production chose to film in Hawaii, as there is some similarity between the landscapes of Okinawa and those of Hawaii.
