The creation of Barbie dates back to the 50s, when Ruth Handler, co-founder of Mattel, noticed that her daughter Barbara played with baby dolls, projecting herself in the role of mother, but did not have a doll option that represented an adult woman. This observation led her to conceive the idea of creating an adult female doll that could be a role model for children.
The inspiration came from a German doll called "Bild Lilli", an adult female figure that was sold as a toy for adults in tobacconists. Ruth Handler decided to create an American version of this doll, adapted for the children's market.
In 1959, Barbie was officially introduced at the International Toy Fair in New York. She wore a black and white striped bathing suit, hoop earrings, high heels and had blonde hair in a "ponytail". It was an instant hit, capturing children's imaginations and becoming a phenomenon.
