On November 12, 1973, a group led by DJ Afrika Bambaataa created Zulu Nation, an NGO created to end social problems that terrorized the streets of the Bronx neighborhood. The group organized non-violent actions such as "battles" that were really an artistic competition. That was how Hip-Hop was born, with the intention of promoting peace between gangs. Zulu Nation is now one of New York's leading social organizations that help fight hip-hop culture and help with many social issues.
