November 25th is Baiana de Acarajé
November 25th is Baiana de Acarajé Day and pays homage to the women who sell acarajé, a typical dish of Bahian cuisine and Afro-Brazilian culture. This date was established in 2010 by Law No. 12,510, as a way of recognizing and valuing the work of Bahian women, who are considered the guardians of Afro-Brazilian tradition and culture. The origin of acarajé dates back to the cuisine of the African peoples brought to Brazil during the colonial period. The dish, made with black-eyed peas, onions and salt, is shaped into a dumpling, fried in palm oil and usually served with vatapá, caruru, salad and dried shrimp. Bahian acarajé women not only sell the food, but also play an important social role, often being responsible for preserving and transmitting culinary and cultural traditions.
