January 18th is Laughter
January 18th is Laughter Day, and celebrates the benefits of laughter for mental and physical health. Studies show that laughing reduces the stress hormone cortisol, increases pain tolerance, and improves emotional well-being by releasing substances such as serotonin and endorphins. Laughter therapy has also been shown to reduce agitation in patients with dementia. In addition, laughter activates facial and abdominal muscles, improves digestion, and can reduce the risk of heart disease. The World Laughter Movement, created in 1995, promotes this practice in approximately 2,500 clubs around the world. Therefore, laughter is a powerful ally in promoting health and quality of life.
