Strength and Balance in the Dancer Pose
Natarajasana, or Dancer Pose, is inspired by Nataraja, the form of Shiva depicted as the cosmic dancer. Its Sanskrit name — Nata (dancer), Raja (lord) and Asana (pose) — conveys movement, balance, and transformation. The posture echoes the Ananda Tandava, a symbolic dance of energy and renewal, blending the creative softness of Lasya with the strength and power of Tandava.
To practice it, stand upright and shift your weight onto one leg. The other leg bends back and is held by the opposite hand, while the free arm extends forward for stability. The torso leans gently forward and the gaze focuses on a distant point, helping maintain balance.
Its main benefits include strengthening the legs, ankles, and hips, stretching the chest and shoulders, and toning the abdomen. The posture also enhances concentration, improves body awareness, releases tension, and promotes a deep sense of inner calm.
