November 13th is Huntington's Disease
November 13th is Huntington's Disease Day to raise awareness about this neurodegenerative genetic condition, caused by a mutation in the HTT gene. The disease affects motor coordination, cognitive functions and emotional behavior, leading to the progressive degeneration of nerve cells. Established by Law No. 14,607/2023, the date seeks to stimulate research, support civil society initiatives and promote information about the disease, aiming to demystify misconceptions and reduce stigma. Huntington's disease affects approximately one in every 10,000 people, with symptoms ranging from involuntary movements and cognitive difficulties to emotional changes, usually appearing between the ages of 30 and 50. Although there is no cure, treatment focuses on controlling symptoms and improving quality of life through medications and therapies.
