Águas Frescas: Refreshing Drinks
To the fresh waters are typical Mexican drinks made from natural fruits, herbs or flowers, and are one of the most popular ways to cool off in the country. The most common combinations include flavors of tamarind, hibiscus (known as agua de jamaica), lemon, cactus and tropical fruits, all prepared with water, sugar and ice, creating a tasty and hydrating drink.
The origin of aguas frescas dates back to ancient Mesoamerican civilizations, such as the Aztecs, who already used native fruits and flowers to create refreshing drinks. However, it was with the arrival of the Spanish colonizers, who introduced sugar, that aguas frescas became popular as we know them today.
Agua de jamaica, made from the hibiscus flower, is one of the most consumed, known for its vibrant color and slightly acidic flavor. Other variations include the sweet and sour tamarind water and the refreshing lemon water.
Today, aguas frescas are consumed throughout Mexico, especially during festivals, at markets and as an accompaniment to meals. They are an essential part of Mexican culture, offering a tasty and natural way to beat the heat and celebrate the country’s authentic flavors.
