December 28th Merchant Navy day, in honor of the birth of Irineu Evangelista de Souza, the Viscount of Mauá, patron of the Merchant Navy. The date was made official in 1962. The Merchant Navy is made up of civilians and operates in maritime commerce, fishing and leisure. Its origin dates back to the colonial period, when maritime trade was regulated. Viscount of Mauá, born in 1813, was one of the biggest businessmen in Brazil, made important investments in the sector, including the founding of Estaleiro Mauá, in 1846, and his dedication to the sector led to his choice as patron of the Brazilian Merchant Navy.
