December 26th Boxing Day
December 26th Boxing Day is a holiday traditionally observed in United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries. Originally, it was a day to give gifts to those in need, but today it is known as a day of shopping and gifts. The name “Boxing Day” may be linked to the alms boxes used in churches during the festival of Saint Stephen, which is also celebrated on the same day. In some European cultures, it is still customary to distribute these alms to the poor. In the UK, Boxing Day is a bank holiday which, if it falls on a Sunday, is moved to the next working day.
