December 17th day of Saint Lazarus
December 17th day of Saint Lazarus. The figure of Saint Lazarus appears in the Bible as a close friend of Jesus and brother of Martha and Mary, residents of Bethany. In the Gospel of John, Lazarus falls ill and dies, but is resurrected by Jesus after four days, as a sign of divine power over death and a symbol of faith and hope for Christians. This miracle made Lazarus a figure of great reverence. In addition to the biblical story, another Christian tradition, especially popular in France and some regions of Spain, associates Saint Lazarus with the figure of a missionary who, after the resurrection, would have dedicated himself to spreading Christianity and serving the poor and sick. In Cuba, Saint Lázaro is especially venerated and syncretized with the figure of Babalú Ayé, orisha of healing and health in Afro-Cuban religions, symbolizing the protection of the sick.
