December 14, Fisheries Engineer's Day in Brazil, a date officially recognized in the national civic calendar by law no. 12,820, sanctioned by President Dilma Rousseff. This commemorative date commemorates the graduation of the first class of fisheries engineers in the country, which took place in 1974 at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE). Fisheries engineers play a fundamental role in fish production, using methods and technologies to locate, process, capture and preserve fish, crustaceans and seafood. In addition to boosting fisheries production, these professionals are committed to the sustainability of water resources and environmental conservation. The profession is regulated by law no. 5,194/66. Throughout the country, various activities, such as seminars, campaigns and mobilizations, are organized to celebrate this date.
