December 13 is Forró
December 13 is Forró Day in Brazil. This date was established by Law No. 12,134, enacted on December 17, 2009, with the aim of recognizing and valuing forró as a Brazilian cultural and musical expression. Forró is a musical genre that has its roots in northeastern culture, especially in the June festivities. Although its origins are somewhat nebulous, it is believed that forró developed from a mixture of Portuguese, African and indigenous musical influences. The choice of December 13 is a tribute to the birthday of Luiz Gonzaga, known as the "King of Baião" and one of the most iconic figures of forró. Gonzaga was one of those responsible for popularizing this musical style throughout Brazil, taking northeastern culture beyond the region's borders.
