December 13 is the day of Saint Lucy
December 13 is the day of Saint Lucy, in honor of Saint Lucy, known as the protector of the eyes and patron saint of those who suffer from vision problems. Saint Lucy was a 4th-century Christian martyr, born in Syracuse, Sicily (Italy), and is one of the most venerated saints in the Catholic Church. Saint Lucy lived during the time of persecution of Christians by the Roman Empire. Devout from a young age, she took a vow of chastity and dedicated her life to helping the poor. Tradition has it that she was denounced by her pagan fiancé for being a Christian, which led to her imprisonment and martyrdom. The most popular legend surrounding Saint Lucy is that she plucked out her own eyes to give them to her accuser, who had praised her for the beauty of her eyes. Miraculously, her pair of eyes were restored by God, and for this reason she is associated with the cure of vision problems. The name Lucy derives from the Latin lux, which means "light".
