November 28, Red Planet
November 28, Red Planet Day, commemorates the launch of the Mariner 4 probe in 1964, the first to transmit images of the surface of Mars to Earth. Called the “Red Planet” because of its reddish coloration, resulting from the high concentration of iron oxide, Mars is the fourth closest planet to the Sun and the second smallest in the solar system, with a diameter of about half that of Earth. This planet has attracted attention due to its similarities to Earth and because of evidence that it may have had water, raising the possibility of life in its past. Red Planet Day celebrates not only the progress made in Martian exploration, but also invites humanity to reflect on the search for life on other planets and the importance of protecting our home, Earth.
