November 10th is Acorn
November 10th is Acorn Day, with the aim of raising awareness about the threats that native forests face in Portugal. The acorn, a fruit of the oak, cork oak and holm oak trees, is especially abundant in the Alentejo and plays an important role in traditional cooking and medicine, being used to make flour for bread and cakes. Created by the Quinta das Palmeiras Secondary School, in Covilhã, in 2009, the day is marked by educational activities, especially in schools, where children sow acorns, go on walks and collect acorns. This event seeks to promote the preservation of native flora and engage young people in the recovery of nature. Acorns also serve as food for pigs and have internationally recognized nutritional and cosmetic properties.
