The Patron Saint of Madrid
November 9th is the feast day of Our Lady of Almudena . This date is especially important in Madrid, Spain, where Our Lady of Almudena is the city's patron saint. Devotion to the Virgin of Almudena dates back centuries and is deeply rooted in Madrid's culture and history. According to tradition, the statue of the Virgin of Almudena was hidden during the Moorish occupation of Madrid so that it would not be destroyed. Years later, with the reconquest of the city by Christians in the 11th century, the image was miraculously found in the wall of an ancient fortress known as "Al-mudayna," from which it takes its name. Since then, Our Lady of Almudena has become a symbol of protection and devotion for the people of Madrid.
