October 13th is World Thrombosis
October 13th is World Thrombosis Day, and was created in 2014 by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH). The date was chosen in honor of Rudolf Virchow, a pioneer in the study of thrombosis. The goal of the day is to raise awareness about thrombosis, its causes, risk factors, signs, symptoms, prevention and treatment, seeking to reduce mortality and disabilities associated with the condition. Thrombosis is characterized by the formation of blood clots that can cause serious complications, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). The main risk factors include immobility, surgery, use of contraceptives and genetic predisposition. Treatment usually involves anticoagulants, which must be used under medical supervision.
