The International Day of Non-Violence is celebrated on October 2. The date was established by the UN General Assembly in 2007 to promote peace and reaffirm the global commitment to the peaceful resolution of conflicts. This date was chosen in honor of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948), leader of the Indian independence movement and one of the most prominent advocates of the principle of non-violence (or "ahimsa"). Gandhi believed that peaceful resistance and dialogue were the best ways to combat injustice, influencing social movements around the world. The International Day of Non-Violence is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of seeking peaceful solutions to conflicts, promoting respect for human rights and social justice throughout the world.
