Chumbinho began participating in competitions in the World Surfing League in 2015, in the junior category. His best placement on the Men's Junior Tour was a 2nd place at RDS Pro Junior in 2017, beaten by one of his best friends, fellow Brazilian Mateus Herdy. In the Men's Challenger Series, his best placement was 2nd place, being defeated by the Hawaiian Ezekiel Lau at the VANS US Open of Surfing in 2022. In the same year and category, João Chumbinho participated in the Saquarema stage of the CT, and in the Semifinal he was defeated by Brazilian three-time world champion, Gabriel Medina, who won the event. In 2021, Chumbinho qualified for the CT for the first time, along with one of his best friends, Samuel Pupo.
