The colon (

The colon ( : ) is a punctuation mark used to indicate a brief pause between two sentences. This pause represents an explanation, enumeration, or citation relationship. It is mainly used for these three cases, as the first statement is not finished, and the second complements and explains it. Colons, like semicolons, indicate pauses between two utterances; however, the colon pause is shorter, without breaking the rhythm and chain of ideas. The semicolon has a longer pause.
