The first national tournament

The first national tournament, organized by the CBD (Brazilian Sports Confederation), which was responsible for national football before the creation of the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation), took place in 1959. The first Brazilian Championship, with the name used until today, took place in 1989. In the six decades of existence, the tournament had 17 champions, with Palmeiras being the biggest winner, with 10 titles; followed by Santos, with 8; Corinthians, with 7; and São Paulo and Flamengo, with 6 titles each. Bahia won the first edition of the competition, in 1959.
