The 1979 tournament

The 1979 tournament, the last year organized by the CBD (Brazilian Sports Confederation), was the second with the highest number of participants in history, behind only the João Havelange Cup, in 2000. In total, 94 clubs competed in the competition, without the presence of Corinthians, São Paulo, Santos and Portuguesa, who boycotted the championship. Internacional was the winner of that year and the first undefeated team in the history of the tournament. There were 16 wins and seven draws to lift the cup.
