In the Soviet Union period

In the Soviet Union period, chess was an obsession and every family had its own board. The game, originally intended for elites, became an important means of political expression for the communist regime. Lenin called it a "political weapon" and, in the Cold War era, chess matches served as a way to enact the battle between ideologies. Personified by the characters of Beth and Borgov, chess has become a symbol of the struggle between two ideological blocs, as well as a competition where any cost is acceptable to achieve victory.
