Even though most of the show's cast didn't know how to play chess, they were given an action plan for the scene. Real-life chess coaches and consultants provided choreography for them to memorize. However, these were not random movements. Some of the games and players were inspired by famous real chess masters. Harry Beltik, for example, based his playing style on the Norwegian grandmaster Magnus Carlsen. Thus, actors and actresses had a direction to follow.
