National Truth and Reconciliation
National Truth and Reconciliation Day is a date celebrated in Canada on September 30th . It was established to recognize the harm caused by the residential school system for Indigenous children, which operated between the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. These schools aimed to assimilate indigenous children into the dominant culture, resulting in physical, emotional and cultural abuse. This day is dedicated to reflecting on these impacts, honoring survivors, their families and communities, and promoting understanding, healing and reconciliation between Indigenous peoples and the rest of Canadian society. The date was officially recognized as a national holiday in 2021.
