The Autumnal Equinox
The Autumnal Equinox marks the official start of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and occurs around September 22nd or 23rd each year. During the equinox, day and night are approximately the same length, about 12 hours each, due to the Sun's alignment with the Earth's equator. This astronomical event is significant because it symbolizes the transition from summer to autumn, a time when temperatures begin to decrease, leaves on trees change color and begin to fall, and the days gradually become shorter. Culturally, the autumnal equinox is often celebrated with festivals, harvests, and other activities that mark the change of season.
