Aquilino Ribeiro
Aquilino Ribeiro, born in 1885 in Carregal, Sernancelhe, is one of the most notable figures in 20th century Portuguese literature. The son of priests and raised in the rural environment of Beira Alta, he found inspiration for many of his works in peasant life. He was a novelist, essayist and political activist, persecuted by the Salazar dictatorship and exiled several times. Among his most emblematic works is O Malhadinhas, which portrays with humour and humanity the life of a peasant from the region.
In Vila Nova de Paiva, a town with which Aquilino maintained a strong connection, the restaurant “Malhadinhas” was born, a living tribute to the writer and his work. In addition to offering typical Beira Alta cuisine, the restaurant seeks to keep Aquilino's memory alive, evoking in its flavours and décor the cultural richness of the mountains that the author described so well. Today, the restaurant is a meeting point for culture, tradition and literature, perpetuating the name and rebellious, wise and profoundly Portuguese spirit of Aquilino Ribeiro.
