March 12 is Librarian's Day
March 12 is Librarian's Day in Brazil, a date dedicated to honoring the professionals responsible for organizing, preserving and disseminating knowledge through books and other sources of information.
The date was established by decree 84.631, of 1980, in honor of the birth of Manoel Bastos Tigre (1882-1957), considered the first librarian by training in Brazil. In addition to being an engineer and poet, Tigre stood out in the field of librarianship, contributing to the appreciation of the profession.
Librarians play an essential role in education and culture, working not only in libraries, but also in documentation centers, archives and even in the digital environment, helping to organize information and promoting access to knowledge.
On this day, several institutions hold events, lectures and activities to highlight the importance of the profession and encourage the appreciation of librarians in society.
