March 10th is Telephone
March 10th is Telephone Day, a date that pays homage to one of the most impactful inventions of the 19th century: the telephone. This technology transformed the way we communicate, bringing people closer together and making the world more accessible.
The date dates back to 1876, when Alexander Graham Bell registered the patent for the telephone, after successfully transmitting voice through the device for the first time. On that occasion, Bell uttered the famous phrase: "Mr. Watson, come here. I want to see you", a milestone that began a new era in communication.
Although Bell is recognized as the inventor, the Italian Antonio Meucci also played an important role in the development of the technology. In 2002, the USA recognized him as the original inventor of the telephone.
In Brazil, the telephone arrived in 1877, when Dom Pedro II acquired the first telephone set, connecting his palace in Rio de Janeiro to the city center. The emperor, a great admirer of technology, participated in a public demonstration of the invention, even talking to Bell during the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, when Bell presented his invention to the world.
Bell's creation boosted long-distance communication and paved the way for the emergence of large telecommunications companies, such as AT&T.
