March 1 is Pig Day
March 1 is Pig Day in the United States. The date was created in 1972 by sisters Ellen Stanley, a teacher, and Mary Lynne Rave, with the aim of honoring pigs and recognizing their importance as intelligent, useful and socially fascinating animals.
The celebration varies by region, but includes events ranging from parties and parades to educational activities at schools, zoos and farms. Many of these events highlight the unique characteristics of pigs, such as their intelligence comparable to that of dogs and primates, as well as their historical and cultural role in society.
Pig Day also promotes awareness about the proper care of pigs, both in rural settings and as pets. Some celebrations include competitions, artistic presentations and even interaction sessions with pigs, delighting children and adults alike.
Although it is a date celebrated with lightness and fun, National Pig Day also serves to remember the importance of pigs in agriculture and gastronomy, being a milestone to value these animals in their multiple contributions to society.
