February 27 Polar Bear Day
February 27 Polar Bear Day, a date created by the NGO Polar Bears International in 2011 to raise awareness about the threats that polar bears face, mainly due to climate change. This day was chosen because it coincides with the period when females build their nests to give birth to their cubs in the Arctic.
The polar bear, found in the Arctic Circle and adjacent areas, is the largest terrestrial carnivore and is adapted to the icy environment. However, due to global warming, its habitat is rapidly being lost, as the melting of the ice in the Arctic harms its feeding and reproduction. Currently, the species is considered vulnerable and is on the IUCN red list.
The date aims to raise awareness about the seriousness of the situation and encourage the adoption of more sustainable practices. To mark the event, several events are held globally, including the "thermostat challenge", in which people are encouraged to reduce their heating use and save energy to help preserve polar bears and the Arctic environment.
