February 8 is the feast day of Saint Josephine Bakhita, a day that celebrates the life and legacy of the Sudanese saint known as a symbol of resistance, freedom and compassion. Saint Josephine is also the patron saint of victims of human trafficking, and the day was established as a time for reflection and action against this serious violation of human rights.
The Story of Saint Josephine Bakhita
Born around 1869 in the Darfur region of Sudan, Josephine was captured as a child and suffered years of slavery and mistreatment. After being taken to Italy, she gained her freedom and found her religious vocation by joining the Congregation of the Canossian Daughters of Charity. Known for her kindness and forgiving spirit, Josephine dedicated her life to prayer and service to those most in need.
Canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2000, Saint Josephine Bakhita is remembered as an example of overcoming, humility and devotion.
Day of Prayer and Reflection Against Human Trafficking
In addition to honoring the saint, February 8 is also recognized as the World Day of Prayer and Reflection Against Human Trafficking, an initiative of the Catholic Church to raise awareness about the exploitation and suffering of victims of this crime.
