21 November is European Cystic Fibrosis
21 November is European Cystic Fibrosis Day, to raise awareness and support for patients and their families. World Cystic Fibrosis Day, celebrated on 8 September, marks the discovery of the CFTR gene. Cystic fibrosis is an inherited genetic disease caused by a mutation in the CFTR gene, which affects the exocrine glands and causes abnormal secretions in the lungs, pancreas and digestive system. It is the most common genetic disease among Caucasian children, with approximately 1 in 2,000 to 6,000 newborns affected in Europe. Diagnosis is made by clinical examination, sweat testing and sequencing of the CFTR gene. Approximately 80% of patients die prematurely due to respiratory complications, and lung transplantation is considered when other options fail.
