Saint Damian of Molokai , also known as Father Damian , was born in Tremeloo, Belgium, on January 3, 1840, and died in Molokai, Hawaii, on April 15, 1889. His feast day is celebrated on April 15 in Hawaii, but in the Catholic Church it is celebrated on May 10th . Beatified in 1995 by Pope John Paul II and canonized on October 11, 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI. was a Belgian Catholic missionary and saint who dedicated his life to caring for lepers on the island of Molokai, Hawaii. He is venerated as the spiritual patron of lepers and marginalized people. After arriving in Hawaii in 1864, he was ordained a priest and later volunteered to serve on Molokai. There, he established a church and a parish, working tirelessly to improve the living conditions of leprosy patients.
