Cinema April 9th:
Opened in the mid-20th century, Cinema 9 de Abril is one of Volta Redonda's most emblematic cultural landmarks. Built during the expansion period of Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN), the space emerged as part of the urban plan aimed at the well-being of the plant's workers. Its name alludes to April 9, 1941, when CSN was officially created — directly responsible for the city's development.
The modern and bold architectural design, designed by renowned architects Ricardo Tommasi and Glauco Oliveiros, made Cinema 9 de Abril one of the most impressive cinemas in Latin America at the time. With a capacity for hundreds of spectators and excellent acoustics, it became the stage for film screenings, cultural events and formal sessions that marked generations of residents.
Today, the space remains a center of cultural reference, having undergone renovations to maintain its structure and adapt it to contemporary needs. There, you can watch film screenings, plays, literary meetings and educational activities. Cinema 9 de Abril is, therefore, more than just a place of entertainment — it is a living part of the emotional memory and history of Volta Redonda.
