April 23 is Choro
April 23 is Choro Day in Brazil, a tribute to Pixinguinha (1897–1973), an icon of Brazilian popular music and one of the genre's leading names. The date was officially established in 2000, recognizing the importance of choro in the country's cultural identity.
Choro, considered the first Brazilian urban musical genre, emerged in Rio de Janeiro in the late 19th century, combining influences from European, African and indigenous rhythms. It is characterized by elaborate melodies, sophisticated harmonies and virtuoso improvisations.
Pixinguinha, born Alfredo da Rocha Viana Filho, was a flutist, saxophonist, composer and arranger, and his works, such as Carinhoso , Lamentos and Rosa , have become choro classics. Although later research indicated that its birth occurred on May 4, the date of April 23 remains as a symbol of the celebration of the genre.
In 2024, choro was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Brazil by the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (Iphan), reinforcing its historical and artistic value.
