The Traditional Catalan Aperitif
Vermut is a traditional alcoholic drink in Barcelona, especially appreciated in the ritual of "fer el vermut", a moment of socializing before meals, where the drink is enjoyed accompanied by snacks. Its origins date back to ancient times, when the Greeks and Romans infused wine with medicinal herbs. However, the modern version emerged in Italy in the 18th century and quickly became popular in Spain, especially in Catalonia.
Catalan vermut is known for its balanced flavor of sweet, bitter and herbaceous, resulting from the infusion of wine with spices such as wormwood, orange peel, cinnamon and cloves. The city of Reus, in Catalonia, became one of the largest production centers of the drink in the 19th century, giving rise to the famous Vermouth de Reus, one of the most traditional brands.
In Barcelona, vermut is served with ice, a slice of orange or an olive, and is a classic in bars and taverns. It is usually accompanied by tapas such as chips, olives and canned seafood. More than just a drink, vermouth represents a relaxed and social lifestyle, and is a must-try for anyone visiting Barcelona.
