Paella: The Taste of the Mediterranean
Paella is an iconic Spanish dish, originating in Valencia in eastern Spain and dating back to the 18th century. It was originally prepared by farmers and fishermen using locally available ingredients such as rabbit, chicken, vegetables and rice. The name "paella" comes from the Valencian word for "pan", the large frying pan in which the dish is traditionally cooked.
Over time, paella has evolved, and many different versions have emerged, including seafood versions, ideal for coastal regions such as Barcelona. Although paella has its roots in Valencia, it is widely enjoyed in Barcelona, especially the versions with prawns, mussels, squid and other fresh Mediterranean shellfish. Seafood paella is one of the most popular in the city, offered in many seaside restaurants, such as on the famous Barceloneta Beach.
The traditional recipe calls for short-grain rice and "socarrat", the crispy layer of rice at the bottom of the pan. In Barcelona, paella is a celebration of Mediterranean flavors, combining fresh ingredients and careful preparation techniques, making it an unmissable culinary experience for anyone visiting the city.
