March 26 is Epilepsy Awareness
March 26 is Epilepsy Awareness Day, known as Purple Day. The date aims to inform the population about epilepsy, reduce the stigma surrounding the condition and support people living with the disease.
Created in 2008 by Canadian Cassidy Megan, Purple Day encourages the use of the color purple as a symbol of solidarity and awareness. Epilepsy affects around 50 million people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), and is characterized by abnormal electrical discharges in the brain, causing epileptic seizures.
On March 26, several actions are promoted globally, such as lectures, educational campaigns and lighting up monuments with the color purple. The focus is to combat myths, encourage early diagnosis and ensure greater inclusion and quality of life for people with epilepsy.
